NY Auto Show: Ford Unveils Flex Crossover

Thursday April 5, 2007
2009 Ford FlexFord has taken the wraps off of the 2009 Flex (formerly know as the Fairlane) crossover vehicle, a large people mover which Ford intends to fill the void left by the departure of the Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans. According to news from the New York Auto Show, the Flex will hit showrooms in mid-2008 as a 2009 model.

While reserving final judgement until I see one on the flesh, I have just two quick observations. The long hood is very truck-like, which limits the amount of space available for the passenger cabin. After all, these vehicles still have to fit in garages -- space taken by a long hood translates into volume not available for passengers and cargo. The rear-opening suicide doors that were in the concept vehicle have been changed to traditional hinged doors, which (unlike sliding doors) will limit accessibility in tight parking spaces.

What do you think? Is the Ford Flex a large crossover that can appeal to minivan buyers, or does the long hood and lack of sliding doors mean that Ford has missed the mark? Click on the comments link below to add your thoughts.
