GM: A Return to the Minivan Market?

Thursday December 14, 2006
GM Fastlane BlogAfter a few weeks of news concerning GM's decision to leave the minivan segment in favor of new crossover vehicles, it appears that the General hasn't written off the minivan segment entirely.

In a recent post entitled "Whither the Minivan?" over at the GM Fastlane corporate blog, GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz discusses their decision to leave the minivan market, but also mentions that GM may not be abandoning the segment forever:

"Lots of minivan talk going on… let me just make one thing clear: Nobody said GM is getting out of the minivan business forever. We simply pulled a minivan option out of the running for one of our architectures. We reserve the right to initiate whatever future product programs we feel the market desires, up to and including new generations of minivans if we deem them necessary and desirable."
Based on sales figures over the last few years it's clear that both Ford and GM have been fighting over the scraps of the minivan market while Toyota, Honda and Chrysler have dominated the segment. That said, GM obviously wants to leave the sliding door open.
